A cross-dimensional, cross-cultural, crossover musical feast from local talents – expect the unexpected when the erhu jams with the harmonica to reinvent classical music, pop and jazz!
‘Boundary’ demarcates lands of different countries and different cultures. In music, ‘time’ demarcates periods and styles. As a city that blends world cultures, Hong Kong does seem to have its own definitions of what is ‘boundary’ and what is ‘time’.
This concert exemplifies a breakthrough on both counts, fully demonstrating the creative charm of young music makers. Two local musicians, I (erhu) and Ho Cheuk-yin (Cy Leo) (harmonica) will make their manifesto not only by performing together as an unprecedented erhu-harmonica duo, but also bringing their own eclectic ensembles on stage. I will jam with yangqin, cello, piano and drums in an innovative programme selection of traditional Chinese music, Guangdong music and oldies of Hong Kong. Leo and his ensemble of harmonica, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums will play classical music and pop. Empowering them are professional composers in Hong Kong – Ng Cheuk-yin, Joyce Cheung, Ricky Wong, just to name a few – who have been commissioned to arrange familiar old tunes into something new, unlimited by boundaries or time. This concert promises to be a fascinating potpourri of sounds from East and West, then and now.
