Chan Pik-sum
Chan Pik-sum is active in both Chinese and Western musical genres, and has played with various leading orchestras, including the Fulcrum Point New Music Project of Chicago, Chung Chi Wind Orchestra of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong as soloist. She has also performed in crossover productions of dance, Chinese traditional theatre and multimedia.
Chan was first trained in erhu under Wong Shu-wing at the Hong Kong Music Office, and has won awards in huqin contests at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Chan then entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she was trained in Cantonese music under the gaohu virtuoso Yu Qiwei, gaining a double major in gaohu and erhu. Upon graduating from the Academy with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree, she furthered her music studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was awarded a Master of Arts (Music) degree.
Chan has served as concertmaster for the Academy Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra. During her studies, Chan was awarded the scott.Scholarship, Hongkong Bank Foundation Scholarship, Society of the Academy for Performing Arts Scholarship and the Helena May Scholarship. She has represented the Academy and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office on tours to the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany, France, Malaysia, the Mainland, Taiwan and Singapore as soloist. Chan went to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Kazakhstan with Lau Kong-wah and Edward Yau Tang-wah at the invitation of the Hong Kong SAR Government Home Affairs Bureau and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office respectively, and performed in recitals and other concerts. Chan was an awardee in 'Persons with Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Arts and Culture' awarded by the Secretary for Home Affairs Commendation Scheme in December 2018 for her distinguished dedication in the promotion and participation of international cultural and arts events.
In recent years, Chan has been active in pop music and has cooperated with different media by performing at concerts of Albert AU Shui-keung, Hacken Lee , Hins Cheung, Jun Kung and operatic tenor Warren Mok Wah-yeun as guest performer. She also staged a crossover erhu-harmonica duo concert with world harmonica champion Cy Leo Ho in Bangkok and Hong Kong which received critical acclaim. Chan is also committed to promoting local traditional culture and actively participates in Cantonese and Nanyin performances, some of which have been recorded in albums. In 2012 and 2014, she was invited by the famous director Clifton Ko to his TV show Director Ko's Blog for interview and performance. She also performed in the musical produced by Spring-Time Stage Productions Limited, The Legendary Fai Wong Musical, by acting, singing, dancing and playing erhu. She was interviewed by Apple Daily, South China Morning Post, Sing Tao Daily, China Internet Daily and U Magazine. Apart from live performances, Chan has also been invited to RTHK4 programmes including Music of Friends and Cantilena for interview and recording performance. Now she is a music columnist for the online media Icompass. In addition, she also plays erxian, gaohu and erhu for Guangdong music recording projects co-organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the University of Hong Kong. She also participated in various Cantonese music concerts as lead performer and soloist. Chan has been invited to give lectures on Chinese and Cantonese music at the Hong Kong SAR Government Education Bureau, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the City University of Hong Kong, HKU SPACE and the Education University of Hong Kong.
